Status epilepticus is a life-threatening neurological emergency characterized by prolonged seizures or recurrent seizures without regaining consciousness in between. It can be classified into generalized convulsive status epilepticus and non-convulsive status epilepticus, with refractory and super-refractory forms being more challenging to manage. The etiology of status epilepticus can vary, including acute symptomatic causes like central nervous system infections, stroke, traumatic brain injury, metabolic disturbances, as well as remote symptomatic factors such as previous CNS injury, neurodegenerative disorders, and cryptogenic origins.
